Visit to Pomona College (Claremont, CA), Apr 28-30, 2005

Claremont City Hall, on Harvard Ave. near Bonita

Inspiring words on Pomona College's entrance gate (on College Ave.):

We happened to be there during Alumni Weekend. The central quad was full of large tents and old people.

Inside Frary Hall, the main dining hall, a stone's throw from Matt's dorm ("Clark North").

A huge painting that graces the inside of Frary Hall.

Courtyard in front of Clark North.

Back side of Clark North. One of the ground-floor windows is Matt's.

Matt's room.

Matt's (and Ken's!) Mazda, in a nearby campus parking lot.

A volleyball court and clock tower near Clark North.

"Little Bridges" music hall, where Glee Club often performs.

"Big Bridges" music hall.

There are many buildings on campus with "Seaver" in their name. Here is a recently completed, impressive-looking biology building.

"Seaver House", on College Ave., where alumni can hang out.

Seaver Laboratory. Ugliest building on campus, in our expert opinion.

There is also a Seaver performance hall (not shown), where we saw Matt's girlfriend Alexis and many other students perform in a dance program Fri night.

Some other interesting shots around campus:

The President's house.

We hung out with Barbara Fowler (my mom's best friend from when we lived in Claremont in 1957-59) and her husband Ray. Our visit inspired the two ladies to get back in touch (by email) after a lapse of many years.

Courtyard of the Student Union Building.

Computer lab.

On Fri afternoon, we took a hike on a mountain trail along a stream near Mt. Baldy.

The Glee Club gave concerts on Thu night and Sat afternoon. The conductor's name is Donna Di Grazia. Matt had two bass solos. At the end of the Sat show, the many alumni in the audience were invited onstage to join in several "school songs". Matt (in tuxedo) is visible in the back row in these two photos.

Matt's aunt Barbara (who lives in nearby Sunland) and cousin Wendy saw the Sat show with us.

An inspiring closing thought:
