Views of Deschutes from Cardinal Landing bridge, where we landed raft.

Hike #2: Sisters Mirror Lake and LeConte Crater.

Sisters Mirror Lake.

There are several nearby, smaller lakes.

On the way back, we went "cross country" (across Wickiup Plain) to reach a trail heading toward LeConte Crater. Another view of South Sister.

Bummer! So much for a planned shortcut.

A long, steep climb up the side of LeConte Crater. A deer (buck) looks back at us. There appears to be a second deer (not seen at the time, only in the photo later) lying down under some trees on the right.

Finally, the rim and interior of the crater.

Some panoramic views.

"Rock mesa" -- expanse of volcanic rubble near the crater. Broken Top and South Sister in distance.

Crayfish safari!

There are many of these fascinating critters living in the Deschutes River. My sister Rachel and her children Ryan and Emily introduced us to the technique for catching them using a piece of hot dog tied to the end of a string. We photographed them on land and immediately returned them to the water.
